There are plenty of Memorial Day parades all over the state to salute war veterans - Coopersville, Lexington, Midland, Port Huron - just to name a few. Folks will line the streets and wave flags, bands will march, and families will head out to parks or their favorite weekend escape destination.
Looking for antiques? Then head to Castle Farms in Charlevoix for the Memorial Day Weekend Antique Show, May 26 and 27. Castle Farms is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Michigan Register of Historic Buildings. Browse through more than 80 booths filled with antique furniture, paintings, prints, decorative accessories, textiles and vintage toys. Charlevoix is a cozy town in northwestern Michigan with fine restaurants, shops and art galleries. The town overlooks Round Lake, Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan. Take a ferry boat ride to visit Beaver Island, 32 miles north of Charlevoix - it's the most remote inhabited island in the Great Lakes.
The sunrise side of Michigan offers many Memorial Day weekend events including the Tawas City Shoreline Arts & Crafts Show May 26-28. With a collection of 36 streams and 44 lakes, the Tawas area many lakeshore recreation experiences. Canoe or kayak the Au Sable River to make your weekend complete, or visit the Tawas Point Lighthouse, in operation since 1876, and now part of the Tawas Point State Park.
Metro Detroit begins Memorial Day weekend celebrations on May 25 with the 4th Fridays with Ford, a new monthly signature evening series celebrating downtown Detroit highlighted by a major free concert at Campus Martius Park. 4th Friday programs showcase the best of downtown Detroit's clubs, galleries, films, shopping and dining. In addition, participating restaurants, pubs and clubs offer special 4th Friday discounts.
Change your tune at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival featuring Techno rhythms on Hart Plaza overlooking the Detroit River May 27-29. Or step back in time at The Henry Ford for the Civil War Remembrance weekend, May 26-28. Attend the Memorial Day Commemoration that will honor the memory of all Civil War soldiers, and visit a Confederate Refugee and Union Civilian Camp to learn how the soldiers endured the war. Music from the era, a bayonet drill and more will make for a truly memorable experience.
