Fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping---or crashing---outside your window, and awaken to the solitude only a remote lighthouse can offer. In Michigan you have a choice of accommodations at restored lighthouses that welcome overnight guests. Interestingly, the largest on the Great Lakes was built in 1917 for three lightkeepers and their families outside of tiny Ahmeek. Sands Hill Lighthouse Inn now hosts couples in 8 guestrooms with private baths.
The 14-room Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast offers spa services outdoors in the screened "Massage Hut" overlooking Lake Superior, or inside the lighthouse during the winter months. The Portage River Light, celebrating its 140th anniversary, now operates as the 5-room Jacobsville Lighthouse Inn.
At the Whitefish Point Light Station 5 rooms in the Coast Guard Lifeboat Station Crews Quarters welcome guests. An overnight stay includes a deluxe Continental breakfast, admission to the adjacent Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and membership in the Historical Society.
Lake Huron is home to the comfortably rustic Middle Island Keepers' Lodge, converted from the U.S. Coast Guard foghorn building that served the Middle Island light, 2-1/2 miles off Alpena's shore.
