The four Great Lakes that touch Michigan are dotted with dozens of islands, many of which have lighthouses that are open to view or visitors. Boats to Mackinac Island pass the Round Island Lighthouse, where the characters played by Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour frolicked in the movie "Somewhere in Time."
Off the "Little Finger" of Michigan, a 1.5-hour ferryboat ride to South Manitou Island passes the North Manitou Island Shoal Lighthouse, which is an offshore light not open to visitors. It is possible to climb the 117-steps to the top of the South Manitou Lighthouse built in 1871 and now operated as part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Beaver Island, about a 30-mile ferry boat ride from Charlevoix, is home to Whiskey Point Light welcoming visitors to St. James Harbor. While at the south end of the island, the restoration of the Beaver Head Lighthouse has been a part of a unique alternative school program.
