Food Culture & Recipe Contest

Michigan Chef
- Courtesy of Midwest Living MagazinePasties, cherries, apples, asparagus and tantalizing cakes and pies--these are the foods that make Michigan's culinary culture unique. To showcase these unique and diverse foods, the Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) has unveiled a new website, which is intended to serve as a cultural resource and interactive food guide. Michigan Foodways was designed to help promote Michigan's assorted food culture as part the 2007-2008 tour Smithsonian exhibit series Key Ingredients and Michigan Foodways. The tour will kick-off its six community Michigan circuit on May 25, 2007.

What really is a typical Michigan meal?  What do our many ethnic communities and their distinct traditions have to do with the taste of Michigan? Michigan is best described as having local specialties instead of having its own cuisine. Visit Michigan Foodways to learn the answers to these questions and so much more about Michigan foods and treasured recipes.

Enter the online recipe and story contest, and vote for your favorite recipes story. This is more than a simple recipe popularity contest as each recipe has its own story. The recipes and stories include Pasties from Calumet, Cranberry Apple Pie from Cheboygan, Sour Cream Coffee Cake with Hickory Nuts from Chelsea, Caramel Apple Pie from Dundee, Pretzels from Frankenmuth, and Asparagus and Red Pepper Tarts from Whitehall.

Other Michigan Foodways début events include a chef challenge at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, a gourmet dinner at the Common Grill in Chelsea, and the Michigan Foodways tour that will take place at several cities across the state.
