Michigan Fall Color Update - October 2007

Fall Color Peaking in Upper Peninsula - 2007

Michigan's annual fall color show has reached its peak across much of the far western and northern Upper Peninsula, reports AAA Michigan, with vibrant red, yellow and orange hues dominating the landscape.

AAA's weekly survey of state parks and regional visitor's bureaus shows predominant color in most areas of the U.P. Naturalists at Bewabic State Park in Crystal Falls and Van Riper State Park in Ishpeming report that yellow and orange hues are 100 percent developed there. Newberry and Copper Harbor also report color development at 100 percent.

The rest of the U.P. reports color development between 75 and 90 percent.

In the Northern Lower Peninsula, color is filling in fast. At Mackinaw's Wilderness State Park, color development is reported at 75 percent - at Hoeft State Park in Rogers City, red and orange hues predominate at 80 percent color development.

Color watchers in Alpena, Traverse City and Boyne City report color levels at between 35 and 50 percent. In Frankfort, it's 40 percent with excellent orange hues reported. Peak expected in mid-October.

In the Southern Lower Peninsula, peak color is still a couple weeks away. At Blandford Nature Center in Grand Rapids, color development is reported at 30 percent - at Sleeper State Park in Caseville and Lakeport State Park in Port Huron, red and yellow hues are beginning to appear, with only 10 percent color development there.
