Ever dreamed of being a lighthouse keeper? Programs are in place at several lighthouses, and you won't have to scamper up and down the tower steps to tend the light; duties typically include greeting visitors, leading tours, tidying up the facility and working in the gift shop.
Stays range from a weekend at DeTour Reef Lighthouse, which is located offshore at the mouth of the St. Mary's River connecting Lakes Superior and Huron. Choose 1 or 2-week stints at Grand Traverse Lighthouse near Northport, on the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, or a 2-week tour of duty at Big Sable Point at Ludington; both are on Lake Michigan. On Lake Huron, the Tawas Point Lighthouse welcomes volunteer keepers a week or 2 at a time.
