Grand Rapids, Michigan’s second largest city, anchors this region, drawing visitors with rich art and cultural scenes and family attractions that include acclaimed Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.

Testaments to a fascinating maritime heritage, lighthouses stand watch over popular beaches that edge lakeside communities including Grand Haven and Muskegon. You can join the nightly parade of sunset watchers, a tradition up and down the Lake Michigan coast, on the walkway that leads from Grand Haven’s vibrant downtown along the harbor to the beach and its signature red beacon. Boats gather, too, for the nightly performances by the world’s largest Musical Fountain, a synchronized light, music and water show.

Inland, the Manistee National Forest lures adventurers with paddling streams and trails for hiking and mountain biking.
