5/17/2011 - 4/7/2012

Chris Webber, Detroit native, National Basketball Association All-Star player (retired) and NBA announcer, collects rare artifacts that illuminate the lives and legacies of African American greats such as Phillis Wheatley, the first African American author; Rosa Parks, mother of the modern civil rights movement; civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and many others. Initially, the items were for Webber’s personal inspiration. As the collection grew, he realized its potential to help educate society, especially children, about the people that helped shape America. Webber now shares his collection with the public by way of ongoing exhibitions. Viewers get a glimpse of their heritage and learn about a different facet of Chris Webber, basketball player, philanthropist and collector of African American history.

Diverse ethnic heritages make the state a colorful kaleidoscope. Evidence of those rich traditions is found in historic cities, savory cafes and welcoming neighborhoods on back roads and main highways throughout the state.

In Detroit, the state’s largest city, the main wave of immigrants came between 1880 and 1930, when the world’s workers were attracted to Henry Ford’s $5-a-day assembly line. By 1925, the foreign-born accounted for nearly 50% of Detroit’s population. Almost a century later, the metropolitan area is home to the largest Arabic-speaking community outside the Middle East, the U.S.’s second largest Polish population (only the Windy City has more) and large concentrations of African-Americans, Belgians, Chaldeans and Maltese. One easy way to get a taste of tradition is to visit the city’s many ethnic eateries. Enjoy homemade pierogi in Hamtramck, sopapillas in Mexicantown, shawarma in Dearborn or soul food in downtown Detroit. Be sure to check out the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the world’s largest such institution.

The rest of the state’s heritage is equally rich. Frankenmuth has made a name for itself — along with thousands of chicken dinners — by emphasizing its German history. HLearn more about this diverse group of people at the Frankenmuth Historical Museum. Holland was settled by the Dutch and you can experience everything from klompen dancing to traditional architecture during the annual Tulip Festival, or any time of year. At the Holland Museum, you’ll find a wealth of fascinating history about the city’s Dutch immigrants.

The culture of the state’s earliest settlers, the Native Americans, can be found at heritage centers like Nokomis Learning Center in Okemos and others throughout the state. In Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, watch for signs for pasties and you’ll be able to feast on the same hearty fare Cornish miners once took into the mines.

Grab a stick and sharpen those skates. It’s time for one of Michigan’s most popular winter activities – ice hockey. Whether you are a competitor or a spectator there are opportunities to catch a game across the state.

Icing

Who needs a fancy rink? With more than 11,000 inland lakes in Michigan it’s easy to start a pickup game no matter where you are. Because of this, pond hockey tournaments are a popular and growing past time in communities across Michigan.

The Labatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championship in St. Ignace is one of the largest pond hockey tournaments in North America. Played on the wild ice of Moran Bay, part of Lake Huron, this is the only tournament where the 'pond' is actually one of the Great Lakes! Watch all the teams, including the Red Wing alumni team, February 17-19.

Head to Mac’s Marina in Whitmore Lake for the Michigan Pond Hockey Classic January 27-29. Four-man teams battle it out on a 75’ x 150’ rink in both day and night games. In its fifth year, the event attracts players from Michigan, the Midwest and even Canada. Or head up north January 27-29 to the 2nd Annual Cadillac Pond Hockey Classic on picturesque Lake Cadillac.

Attending a Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena is an exhilarating combination of excitement and tradition. With 11 Stanley Cups and more than 50 Red Wings in the Hockey Hall of Fame, the team remains a perennial favorite. But be sure to watch for flying octopuses!

In West Michigan, the Grand Rapids Griffins, an affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, play at Van Andel Arena in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Goalie Joey MacDonald has paid tribute to his adopted state, featuring the Mackinac Bridge and Detroit skyline on his goalie’s mask.

The Battle Creek Revolution, part of the All American Hockey League, gets fans fired up in Battle Creek and offers an affordable family outing.
Last year, the Kalamazoo Wings won the East Coast Hockey League Championship for the first time. An affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and the New Jersey Devils, the team plays at Wings Stadium with a dedicated Fanzone.

On February 11 the University of Michigan Wolverines will compete against rivals the Michigan State Spartans in an annual showdown at the Joe. Joe Louis Arena will also host the 31st Annual CCHA Championships March 16-17. Each year, the best teams from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association travel to Detroit for championship games to determine a CCHA Tournament champion. I came back to MI after 10 years of being away. What a great time! I saw the Tigers play, was able to walk through Ford Field, went to all the casino's. Also enjoyed the Farmer's market, eating in Greek Town....and just sight seeing downtown. I was just amazed how inviting, and clean the city has become. It was just a all around great time. I'm already making plans to come back.

Living in Rochester Hills, Michigan our family has always loved traveling to the great city of Detroit! Traveling to Detroit is so exciting because every time we visit Detroit there is more improvement in the city. I wished I lived there! We tell all of our friends and family to see the difference in Detroit. It is truly a city reborn.

On a beautiful, sunny, warm but breezy day in the heart of Detroit, Campus Martius Park welcomed the polka-dot king, Tyree Guyton, to its stage to spread a message of social awakening to an eclectic crowd of gatherers of Detroit artists, musicians, educators, and professionals. The presentation, part of the Campus Martius Park/Au Bon Pain/Borders bookstore Saturday Book Club series, included readings from contributors of the book "Connecting the Dots" as well as the opportunity to ask Mr. Guyton questions and have him sign the book. Of the questions asked, the artist reiterated the need for communities to bind together and decide their own course, not to necessarily wait for others to decide for them. When asked about controversy, the man who makes art from discarded objects who has seen a lot of controversy in his day, responded controversy is good because it forces people to make a decision, to take a stand. As Tyree and the contributors stood on the stage at Campus Martius Park, another group of pioneers whiled away the perfect afternoon. The Detroit Petanque Club took advantage of the sandy, gravel border of the Campus Martius green by playing its bocci-like pasttime, and teaching the game to interested passers-by. Of those passers-by, chasing after a three year-old daughter, was the sporadic sighting of Derrick May, one of the three inventors of Detroit Techno music, there to support the Detroit arts scene. From Campus Martius to Lafayette Coney Island, for the often imitated taste of loaded coneys and chilli-cheese fries. A perfect day in Detroit...

I was born and raised in beautiful west Michigan, on the shores of the Big Water. Every Sunday, Mom'd pack a picnic breakfast of eggs and bacon and milk and bread, and we'd go to Warren Dunes St.Park to spend a magnificent day. On the way home,we'd stop at the hundreds of Mom and Pop roadside produce stands for world class apples(sit down,Washington State. You are a beautiful place, but Michigan apples are far better)!,peaches, sweetest sweet corn you ever tasted, all covered in hot dripping butter, fresh crisp snap beans,a cornucopia of good farm fresh foods. Later,I moved to Manistee, where my love of the Big Water grew even more and more to represent my soul, and the stunningly Victorian Port City became-and still is-the home of my heart. I now call El Paso,Tx.home.I hated winter! Snow and slush and cold never appealed to me.I'd much rather have Chiristmas under Texas skies!,but I terribly miss my Michigan. I miss the Manistee National Forest, Sleeping Bear Dunes, cherrys fresh from the trees of Grand Traverse Bay. The big ships slowly, majestically making their ways across the far horizon, the golds and reds and oranges of the sun setting across the lake. The deer and bear and turkeys of our pristine forests, the taste of trout caught fresh in the Manistee River, frying over an open fire at camp in Blacksmith Bayou. The way the air is so clean it hurts to breathe, and the unbelievable of fall. Climbing the old fire tower to look across a sea of pines to horizon. The way the soil smells freshly to spring planting, after a gentle rain. The scent of fresh mowed grass. Michigan is the water wonderland, and a place of magical contrasts. From ultra modern cities of Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing, to primeval forests and miles of golden sands that bet you to walk barefoot and marvel at the scope of our Great Lakes. To see Michigan is to know why the State motto is so true; If you seek a beautiful ,look about you!

Over the Labor Day Weekend, I traveled to Detroit and Ann Arbor ostensibly to take in their art museums. As someone who usually goes to places like New York, London, and Paris for art, I was surprised when a Google search for Rembrandts took me to the Detroit Institute for the Arts site. But this is what I wanted to see and after e-mailing my colleague, a Michigan native, she highly encouraged me to check out DIA **as well as** U of M's art museum in Ann Arbor. I did find a number of Dutch masters at DIA and Rembrandt drawings at the UMMA. She also suggested a number of places and sights she thought I'd find interesting. I am not your ordinary tourist, but the kind of person who would take in the unusual and be willing to, for example, witness the changes of Jefferson Avenue as she drove west to east to the Grosse Pointe area. As part of social commentary, I found this fascinating and indicative of American history. She told me about Corktown with its some sort of revival via young artist and alternative types who have brought new life to an otherwise blighted area. (It also helped that there was an NPR feature on this side of Detroit.) I took this suggestion also and found a charming bistro that also grew vegetables in their gardens. I was also treated to that Midwestern hospitality at a charming inn in Ann Arbor, which took care of me, met my rather complicated dietary needs, and provided an overall lovely ambience in which I, as a stranger to that community, could relish. (I wasn't after all, going to a conference or taking my kid to college.) As for the art, I found that neither my colleague nor the DIA site was exaggerating about these institutions. There is a wealth of resources here and it does seem to match DIA's claim that it is one of the most important museums west of Philadelphia. The museums are not expensive therefore making art accessible to a lot more people than what you would find in the usual places. Because they are not so crowded, there is also space and time for visitors to really see the works and appreciate them without having to jockey for viewing space.

When I was a child long long ago, my family lived in Romulus and every year we looked forward to Christmas as usual for many reason, but one of the most was Cobo Hall. Our parents took us to Cobo Hall for Christmas every year and it was so wonderful. The giant snowman slide was so fun and most of all was seeing Santa at the north pole. The gingerbread houses and elfs and Santa's workshop made it all seem so real. All the wonderful decorations and things to do. It was so beautifully done up for Christmas. We moved away and all grew up, and now I am back and so is some of my family, and I was so hoping that you were still doing up Cobo Hall. I was looking on this site for something outstanding to do with my grandchildren this year...

(Editor's note: Cobo Hall no longer hosts a Christmas event, but you can search site for the other Holiday events going on in and around the metro Detroit area).

We arrived early Friday (6/19) and went to Detroit Science Center to experience the Star Trek Exhibition. It was really cool. We drove around downtown Detroit seeing the sculptures and buildings. It was great to be back home. We toured Hitsville U.S.A.(Motown Museum) and loved seeing everything there on display. Saturday we toured the Greenfield Village seeing awesome sites like Edison's work place, the glass blowing and many others. The Motor Muster car exhibit was in full swing. So many cars to see it was hard to be sure to see all of them and the regular exhibits all in one day. The following day (Sunday 6/21) we toured The Henry Ford Museum and the Rock Stars, Car and Guitars exhibit. We were blown away. I am a school bus driver and thought it was so cool to see the first school bus. We are truly amazed that someone could be so forward thinking that they preserved so many wonderful things for generations to come to view. Lots of memories of growing up in the 60's and 70's while we went through the decades section. I would recommend these places to anyone and everyone. We are hoping that maybe some year in the future we could enter our own car (1974 Dodge Charger) in the Motor Muster exhibit. It would be an honor for us. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

This was probably my best Halloween ever. My daughter persuaded me to dress as a gypsy, and three generations- my husband and me, our son in law, and our 4 year old granddaughter went to Greenfield Village to trick or treat. Elaborately carved jack-o-lanterns illuminated a path thru the dark village, haunted by specters such as the grim reaper, a wailing woman, and the headless horseman (with his horse). To collect our treats from the weird denizens, we crossed a covered bridge from which spooky fog was emanating and passed many eerie sights including skeletons giving a concert in the bandstand (they were playing the bones, of course), a pirate ship with raucous pirates, a haunted cemetery, and some flying brooms. I saw the village in a whole new light.

When our family travels to Detroit its not just a evening out to dinner, its a memorable experience. Our experience usually starts out in the famous and historical Greektown district. Greektown is home to many authentic Greek restaurants, shops, a casino and a Detroit People Mover stop. The Detroit People Mover is the quickest and cheapest way to get around downtown Detroit. Its about a 15 minute ride and still 50 cents. After we take the people mover to the Renaissance Center station. The Renaissance Center is home to General Motors world headquarters and a Marroitt hotel. Yet, we are not here to see GM, we're here to walk the Detroit Riverfront. The Detroit Riverfront promenade is brand new. Since 2007 almost 3 miles of beautifully landscaped walkway travels from Joe Louis Area to Belle Isle bridge. On the walkway, one could think they were walking along a California pier instead of being in the Motown. The sound of seagalls and the warm sun shining is a very peaceful and energizing experience. After our walk on the riverfront, its time for a bite to eat. We head up Woodward Ave to the area known as Campus Martius. Campus Martius rivals Rockefeller Square in New York. After eating a great sandwhich from Au Bon Pain its time to leave Detroit and head back home. Everytime we spend time in the city its a great experience. The City of Detroit has gone through an amazing transformation since the early 2000's. I would recommend everyone takes trip back down to Detroit.

We have been to the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise for several years now. It is a huge event with every type of motor vehicle imaginable present. Auto makers bring out old and not so old prototypes and concept cars. Engineers bring their hot rods and modified vehicles. Classic cars of all types are everywhere. If you don't see it here it is not made in the world of cars. There are thousands of classic and custom cars. The cars are parked everywhere along Woodward and you can generally walk right up and get a close look at the car and talk to the owner. If there is a better gearhead event anywhere, it's not on this planet. http://www.woodwarddreamcruise.com/
