1/27/2012 - 4/29/2012

American sculptor Deborah Butterfield is among the most respected and acclaimed artists of her generation. Her horses, like the beloved and iconic Cabin Creek (1999), in Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s permanent collection, have been the focus of great interest as much for their creative use of materials as for their craftsmanship. This exhibition features installations of large-scale and pedestal-size horses. Each unique example is composed of a wide variety of materials from found and reclaimed metals, to branches and earth. Although each sculpture is inspired by a specific horse the artist has known, the works are not portraits in the traditional sense, but representations of the essence of that creature. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the artist and Grounds for Sculpture. For more information, click on the website link or call (616) 957-1580.

The 80-degree conservatory is filled with thousands of exotic butterflies from tropical regions around the world. More than 40 different species of butterflies and moth make this a warm and colorful exhibition. Throughout the exhibition, butterflies can be viewed drinking nectar from the flowering plants and feeding stations, congregating among stream beds and flying freely within the five-story tropical conservatory. Approximately 800 chrysalides are delivered to Meijer Gardens weekly. Visitors may watch delicate chrysalides and cocoons being placed in the Butterfly Bungalow, where the unique creatures transform and take their first flight.
Grab a stick and sharpen those skates. It’s time for one of Michigan’s most popular winter activities – ice hockey. Whether you are a competitor or a spectator there are opportunities to catch a game across the state.

Icing

Who needs a fancy rink? With more than 11,000 inland lakes in Michigan it’s easy to start a pickup game no matter where you are. Because of this, pond hockey tournaments are a popular and growing past time in communities across Michigan.

The Labatt Blue UP Pond Hockey Championship in St. Ignace is one of the largest pond hockey tournaments in North America. Played on the wild ice of Moran Bay, part of Lake Huron, this is the only tournament where the 'pond' is actually one of the Great Lakes! Watch all the teams, including the Red Wing alumni team, February 17-19.

Head to Mac’s Marina in Whitmore Lake for the Michigan Pond Hockey Classic January 27-29. Four-man teams battle it out on a 75’ x 150’ rink in both day and night games. In its fifth year, the event attracts players from Michigan, the Midwest and even Canada. Or head up north January 27-29 to the 2nd Annual Cadillac Pond Hockey Classic on picturesque Lake Cadillac.
