With more than 100,000 artifacts in the Michigan Historical Museum collections, only a small percentage is on display at any one time. Today, you get a rare opportunity to see some of the more unusual artifacts that we preserve for the people of Michigan: a miniature iron maiden, a piece of the hangman's scaffolding on which the Lincoln assassination conspirators were executed, and a two-headed brook trout. This program is included free with museum admission. Saturday Feb. 18 from 12 until 4. Admission is $6 adults, $4 seniors, $2 6-17 (optional), and under 5 free. For more information click on the website link or call (517) 241-6852.

Got mud? Michigan’s got mud holes. And bottomless mud. Off-roaders will find mud boggin’ and more---rocks, stumps, logs, water obstacles and sand---on Michigan’s 3,200 miles of lightly groomed trails and at tracks and parks that have been specially designed to put motorcycles, ATVs, 4X4s and SUVs to the test.

Grab the Michigan ORV/ATV trail maps, pull on the helmet, strap on the goggles, get the winch ready and head to the great outdoors for a ride to remember, whether it’s an scenic trail excursion or a white knuckle track experience.

The State of Michigan’s ORV system of motorcycle trails, all terrain vehicle (ATV) trails, and ORV routes crosses mostly state forest land. The system also has five scramble areas, where a variety of vehicles mix and mingle (some restrictions may apply), including the popular Silver Lake State Park where driving on the sand dunes is allowed. The state has multiple regulations and guidelines, from licensing to land use, equipment requirements, age restrictions and sound emission (maximum 94dB A). Read all about it in the online Handbook of Michigan Off-Road Vehicle Laws.

Need wheels? You’ll find sources for rentals at michigan.org, as well as details on the following ORV sites and more public areas and privately owned parks where you can take the family to play, get a grip on your ride, or challenge your skills and your vehicle.

This typically means full size trucks & SUV's to RUV's, ATV's and motorcycles. Operators are allowed to 'go where they please' even creating their own trails. These scramble areas are a part of Michigan's designated trail system. >more

A RV vacation brings families together to enjoy beaches, state parks, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, biking and popular tourist attractions and destinations. Even in today’s tight economy RV families planning a visit to Michigan are making hundreds of reservations for RV campgrounds and RV resorts. My granddaughter Dellaunna needed to burn some energy, the weather outside was awful; Impression 5 Museum in Lansing was the perfect solution This is NOT a museum with rules like "Quiet Please" or "Do Not Touch". At this hands-on museum, children use their muscles as well as their minds, and the 5 senses really are all engaged in exploring a myriad of subjects; broadcasting, water, sound, the heart, color, to name a few. There are exhibits for a range of ages. A room for smaller children is furnished with toys such as small slides, a water table, a kid size kitchen, and puzzles. In one corner is a separate, padded area for those not yet walking. Many of the exhibits appeal to a wide range of ages. My husband likes the electric trains downstairs Four year olds have their own way of exploring. Dellaunna was fascinated that she could lift herself off the ground (pictured). Later, she will be interested in the pulley system that made it possible. The facts of air pressure don't interest her yet, but launching the bottle rocket (using air pressure) sure does. For now, she is more interested in making noise than learning the science of musical instruments, but her mom is interested in the science. Impression 5 is a great place for kids to have fun, burn energy, explore, and even learn things. We usually spend about 3 hours there.

I was born and raised in beautiful west Michigan, on the shores of the Big Water. Every Sunday, Mom'd pack a picnic breakfast of eggs and bacon and milk and bread, and we'd go to Warren Dunes St.Park to spend a magnificent day. On the way home,we'd stop at the hundreds of Mom and Pop roadside produce stands for world class apples(sit down,Washington State. You are a beautiful place, but Michigan apples are far better)!,peaches, sweetest sweet corn you ever tasted, all covered in hot dripping butter, fresh crisp snap beans,a cornucopia of good farm fresh foods. Later,I moved to Manistee, where my love of the Big Water grew even more and more to represent my soul, and the stunningly Victorian Port City became-and still is-the home of my heart. I now call El Paso,Tx.home.I hated winter! Snow and slush and cold never appealed to me.I'd much rather have Chiristmas under Texas skies!,but I terribly miss my Michigan. I miss the Manistee National Forest, Sleeping Bear Dunes, cherrys fresh from the trees of Grand Traverse Bay. The big ships slowly, majestically making their ways across the far horizon, the golds and reds and oranges of the sun setting across the lake. The deer and bear and turkeys of our pristine forests, the taste of trout caught fresh in the Manistee River, frying over an open fire at camp in Blacksmith Bayou. The way the air is so clean it hurts to breathe, and the unbelievable of fall. Climbing the old fire tower to look across a sea of pines to horizon. The way the soil smells freshly to spring planting, after a gentle rain. The scent of fresh mowed grass. Michigan is the water wonderland, and a place of magical contrasts. From ultra modern cities of Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing, to primeval forests and miles of golden sands that bet you to walk barefoot and marvel at the scope of our Great Lakes. To see Michigan is to know why the State motto is so true; If you seek a beautiful ,look about you!

Today (Oct.17th) was a beautiful sunny Fall day in Lansing. For a number of months, the city had been working to build a new "roundabout" in the center of downtown. Well, today, the mayor and other dignataries launched the new downtown traffic look with the help of about six teams of horses. The parade went up Michigan Ave., around the roundabout, down Washington Sq. and then up and around the Capitol Building. It was a nice lunchtime break for all of the workers and visitors to downtown. The mayor noted that the center of the roundabout will have a big new fountain as its centerpiece, but that won't come until next year. Anyway, the new roadway, the majestic horses, the colorful flowers, and the view of the Capitol Building, all combined for a very nice noon experience.

I can’t tell you how exciting it is to be downtown in Lansing recently. We were downtown recently in the evening and headed towards Tavern on the Square. I had always thought that downtown Lansing emptied out after 5 pm on the weekdays because all the State employees go home to the suburbs. But lo and behold, there were lots of people walking down the streets, some Cooley students heading to their lofts and couples enjoying the last beautiful fall days sitting outside on the patio at Tavern on the Square. With that awesome fireplace warming the entryway tables, I can picture this area being used all 3 seasons, and maybe more. As always, the manager, Jack makes everyone welcome and the chef, Justin?? is available to chat about the menu or anything you like. Same with the bartender, who seems actually interested in how you are doing. While walking over, we caught a glimpse of Jesse Jackson, in town for a couple of days, greeting some people before heading in to dine at Troppo, which also had people seated outdoors. And the mayor, Virg Bernaro was out and about also. All this, on a Wednesday night! Oh, and the construction on Michigan Ave. was finished so the new circle was a breeze to navigate and all the flowers that were planted looked so vibrant. It was a new downtown to see! With the newest announcements of proposed redevelopment, I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.
