Western Michigan is home to ArtPrize from September 24-October 12, 2014. The entire city of Grand Rapids becomes an art gallery when hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world converge to experience, explore, and actively participate in the radically open and independently organized international art competition. The city hums with creative energy for 19 days, September 24-October 12, 2014, across three square miles of downtown. ArtPrize entries are located in venues from world-renowned museums and private galleries to public parks, restaurants and local coffee shops.
ArtPrize is unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike--there's something for everyone. 2014 marks the 5th anniversary for this revolutionary event, and it has come a long way in just five short years. During the competition, the public awards artists $280,000 in prize money by voting either online, via text message, or by mobile app. Two rounds of voting narrows the entries down to the top ten with the winning submission, receiving the $200,000 top prize. An additional $280,000 is awarded by jury, making the competition the world's largest ArtPrize. There are also special transportation options to get to the various venues throughout the city. Buy an ArtPrize Wristband (2 for $5!) at the ArtPrize HUB, any Exhibition Center, or one of several area Meijer stores to gain unlimited rides on the DASH and all Rapid buses for the duration of the event. Or, explore on foot on a series of designated walking paths in local neighborhoods that will take you past ArtPrize Exhibition Centers and venues, along with many of the city’s natural features, landmarks, restaurants, and shops. And with nearly 1,000 bicycle parking spaces available throughout downtown Grand Rapids, you can always find a safe and convenient spot to lock up.
While participating in ArtPrize, be sure to see experience Grand Rapid's other downtown treasures. Visit the new Downtown Market, a 138,000 square-foot foodie heaven hosting butchers, bakers, fishmongers and more. Raise a pint at one of over 20 local breweries serving some of the finest craft brews and discover why Grand Rapids holds the title of Beer City, USA. Visiting with kids? Be sure to explore the Grand Rapids Children's Museum located in the heart of downtown. There's also plenty to do after dark. The downtown entertainment district puts you in the middle of many nighttime diversions: live-music bars, sports bars, comedy clubs, theatres and more. Everything's within a five-minute walk of your downtown hotel!
