Every year during the month of August, art fills the air in Mt. Pleasant, Mich during Art Walk Central. This juried art competition, presented by Art Reach of Mid Michigan, brings artists from all over the state to compete for over $20,000 in prizes. Their artwork is displayed throughout downtown businesses, Central Michigan University and the Ziibiwing Cultural Center. During Art Walk Central the public is invited to browse the pieces and vote for their favorite in the People’s Choice category.
Art Walk Central was an idea influenced by another famous art event, ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Mich. “We took a road trip to see the event, and were overwhelmed with how cool it was to be surrounded by so much art! We went back the next year and confirmed in our minds that we could do an event like this in Mt. Pleasant,” said Kathy Hill, Executive Director at Art Reach of Mid Michigan. Since 2012 it has expanded into one of the largest summer events in Mt. Pleasant.
Art Walk Central is much more than an art competition. During the competition week, spectators can also enjoy art inspired events and interactive workshops. Each workshop offers a different style of artistic work including chalk art, pastels, and stained glass. Visitors can enjoy steamroller print making, poetry slams, and art battles. “Our goals at Art Reach are simple: to expose our community to art events and have them participate in the People’s Choice voting,” said Hill, “We hope that our local artists enjoy this event also; it’s a great opportunity for them to showcase their work.”
Visitors can also enjoy other downtown events during the Art Walk Central week, such as the outdoor Movies by Moonlight series and the Max and Emily’s Outdoor Summer Concert Series. New for 2015 the Mount Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau will be partnering with Art Reach of Mid Michigan to bring the Glow in the Art 5K on July 31st at 10 p.m. Whether you’re an artist or just love admiring the original work, there is something for everyone at Art Walk Central. So take some time this summer and enjoy the arts in Mt. Pleasant.
