When one thinks of the Holland Tulip Time Festival, tulips are (logically) the first thing that come to mind. And with good reason. During the annual festival, millions of tulips are in bloom and quite a sight to behold. But beyond the tulips and events celebrating the town’s Dutch heritage, music lovers will be happy to find a robust schedule featuring regional and national bands.
“Tulipalooza” is the festival’s outdoor musical extravaganza, featuring a Battle of the Bands, where 6 bands battle for the winning title, as well as performances by hard rock band Rev Theory & Taddy Porter, with special guest Shadow Status, as well as the blues/rock bands Ty Stone, and The Soul of James Brown Thirsty Perch Blues Band. The winning band from the battle will be Ty Stone’s special guest.
Concert-goers wanting to hear some pop music stylings from the past will find what they are looking for at the Tulip Doo Wop Show, featuring The Contours, Marvelettes, and the Diamonds. If you loved the music from the movie Dirty Dancing, then this show is right up your alley! The Contours’ performance is jam-packed with dazzling choreography, impeccable harmonies, and timeless Motown grooves that everyone knows and loves. The Marvelettes are known as the group that caused Motown to change the label’s focus from single Bluesy soul artists to a smooth orchestrated harmonic sound, and the Diamonds are known for their hit song, “Little Darlin’,” also called “The National Anthem of Rock and Roll.”
A show featuring Gary Puckett (formerly of The Union Gap), and B.J. Thomas round out the festival’s concert-going opportunities. Gary Puckett and the Union Gap was one of the most successful musical groups of the sixties. Gary’s unmistakable signature voice garnered six consecutive gold records and top ten Billboard hits. B.J. Thomas owns one of the most distinctive voices in American Pop Music making many of his signature hits unforgettable. BJ Thomas’ career has taken him through Country, Gospel and Pop, providing his fans with an outstanding series of musical history.
Jazz lovers have not been left out! They will find two jazz opportunities at the Tulip Time Festival. The first is a journey through a History of Jazz, hosted by the Holland Jazz Orchestra. The second features Wally’s Warehouse Waifs as they play the music of the masters from the early New Orleans days through the Swing and the Big Band eras.
The Tulip Time Festival has truly grown beyond its Tulip roots, and offers many wonderful events throughout the 8-day celebration, which takes place May 7 – 14.
