Brick Loads of LEGO Fun Come to Michigan [Plus a Giveaway!]

LEGO KidsFest, a giant traveling LEGO expo, is coming to Michigan for the first time this weekend, October 12 – 14. Today, Aaron Wartner, part of the LEGO KidsFest national tour’s production team, fills us in on this fun event.

Read about it below and be sure to see how you can win tickets to LEGO KidsFest in Novi at the bottom of the post.

Ready your building skills!  The LEGO® KidsFest national tour is stopping for the very first time in Michigan, October 12 – 14, 2012, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.  This event brings all of the creative hands-on, minds-on fun of LEGO building and experiences together in this three acre activity- and entertainment-packed family event for children of all ages and builders of all skills and interests.

The LEGO KidsFest is a highly interactive experience covering over 150,000 square feet of space.  The event includes LEGO product-based activities as well as activities that can only be had at the LEGO KidsFest.  Here are some highlights:

  • LEGO Model Gallery: dozens of life-sized models made entirely from LEGO bricks
  • LEGO Master Builders: live demonstrations and activities from the crew who get paid to play
  • Creation Nation: build your own creation to add to a custom map of the U.S.
  • Race Ramps: build your own custom car, then race it down the ramp against friends and family
  • LEGO Games Arena: roll the dice to play LEGO board games
  • Construction Zones: creative free build, play and display areas
  • LEGO DUPLO®: younger visitors can explore imagination through building
  • Brick Pile: a gigantic pile full of LEGO bricks for creative play and enjoyment
  • Monochromatic Builds: bricks of a single color to foster group creativity
  • Brickscapes: fantastic displays that combine lots of LEGO and DUPLO sets

Any family who likes to be inspired, get hands-on and have fun together won’t want to miss LEGO KidsFest.  We’re bringing so many activities for Michigan families to test and showcase their creativity and building skills in what is sure to be a family event to remember.

The event began in 2009 in Connecticut, the North American headquarters for LEGO Systems.  The initial idea was to offer a unique LEGO experience for those who live nearby.  We expected 5,000 attendees; 25,000 showed up.  The enthusiasm for the event brought us to the idea of a national tour.  There are a limited number of tour stops each year, and it is rare for us to repeat a market in a consecutive year; Michigan will be our 14th show since we got started four years ago.

Each LEGO KidsFest tour stop is a massive undertaking:  all the bricks and models need to be shipped in and set up; partnerships with various local organizations are established; about twenty representatives of LEGO Systems and the LEGO KidsFest come in to town; and local staff is hired to ensure an excellent visitor experience.

In Michigan, the LEGO KidsFest is pleased to be working with several local organizations, including The Robot Garage, Michigan Science Center, Visit Detroit, Pure Michigan, The Henry Ford, City of Novi, and the LEGO Store at Somerset Collection.

More information on the event is available at

Fun LEGO facts:

    • LEGO is the contraction of two Danish words, “leg godt” which means “play well”
    • There are 915 million ways to combine six eight-stud LEGO bricks
    • More than 400 billion LEGO® bricks have been produced since 1949
    • The LEGO minifigure represents the world’s largest population of people!
    • With a production of about 306 million tires produced a year, the LEGO group is the largest producer of tires in the world

  • TinaPrevost

My grandson is a LEGO fanatic. He asks for them on all Holidays and Birthdays and even makes videos on them. He just turned 9 and would love to go to this show

  • pcxterminator

We would love to go, our kids absolutely LOVE Lego. We always build our sets and display them for a while on our shelves before taking them apart and using them to build other creations… Once my kids get be a little older, they will be able to play with my collection that I have in storage in our basement. My Uncle has some of the original sets of Lego and my kids love to play with them when they visit their Great Grandmother. They would be so surprised to get to visit this show.

  • TerriStephen

My son loves building Star Wars things out of his LEGOS. He would LOVE to go to this event. Every holiday and birthday that’s all he asks for.

  • CrysTal1

We would really enjoy this event. My husband and I have one daughter. We have been trying to see if she will take interest in building and engineering to see the fun side of it. At 8 years-old, she does show a spark of interest, Lego KidsFest would be the perfect place to convert that spark into a full-blown flame and will hopefully open her mind to the endless possibilities of building and engineering. :o)

Just the other day my son and daughter made a pact.  They agreed to do their homework right when they get home from school so they have as much time as possible to escape into their Lego fantasy every night of the week!  We have Bionicles that ride on cars, super heros that save horses, and everything in between.  My daughter still has an oven I built for her to cook her Lego fish in three years later and says she will never take it apart!  Lego, you help my kids deal with the everyday stresses of growing up and keep them creative and imaginative like no other toy can.

  • sfg74

My kids love building things.  They use things around the house to build different things.  They also have a supply of legos that they use to make cars, houses, planes and what ever else creeps into their imagination.  It would be great fun to take my kids to enjoy this experience.

  • MissyWheeler

Lego KidsFest is the perfect way to spend the day with the family! My two boys always bring the Lego box out on days when we have nothing to do. I love that they can sit and create for hours! We would love to go to this event!

  • AaronPoplawski

    forgot this,

  • MissyWheeler

This would be the perfect way to spend the day with the family! My two boys love Legos. It has been the one item that is always on the Christmas List. They look forward to getting their magazine in the mail and always bring the “tub” of Legos out on lazy days.

  • LindaTomson

Legos have been passed from one child to the next , from one family to another as our children have grown and had kids of their own. Its been a family  tradition since I can remember. Oldest to youngest still enjoy building giving us the perfect family fun where all can join in. Even have a engineer now and another who hopes to be. Cant think of a better time with all the  kids. A trip like this would just top off our tradition.

  • LindaTomson

    Forgot my email..its

This event looks fantastic! I’ve been hoping to get my kids down to the LEGO store in Downtown Disney for years, but I just haven’t had the funds. This is much bigger and right in my back yard, here in Michigan! Thanks for the chance! #puremichigan

  • MelissaJones1

My son loves to play with Legos.  His favorite thing to build is houses.

  • bmyers555

My two boys would LOVE LOVE LOVE the opportunity to come to this event!!  We were supposed to visit the Lego store in Chicago this past summer but because of work and family events going on we were unable to make a trip to Chicago.  Winning the tickets would make my kids week!!!!  Please pick me :))

  • tvdeegan

My house looks like a miniature version of Lego-fest. My son  aspires to be a master builder!

  • lmg75

My 13 yr old son has built Lego Systems since age 2. He was the leader @ his home daycare on how to assemble the tougher systems. Kids looked to him
for guidance. He now builds the historic buildings & monuments. We have nearly every one of them. This would be a chance for him to still be a kid. Please pick us. :)

  • LPatzer23

This would make my 7 year old son’s (Johnny)  year!!! He has only played with Hot Wheels and Legos since he was 9 months. He still plays with my legos from when I was a kid. Legos is our favorite activity to do together and this would be a memory we would never forget. I have known about this event for awhile. We received the post card for this event months ago but I quickly disposed of it knowing there is now way I could afford for our entire family to go. The ticket prices are pretty high for a single mom.
I can afford a trip to Novi with no problem. I’m 2 1/2 hours away. If I win I would take my Sister and my 5 yr old niece. PLEASE PLEASE PICK US!!! I’ll send you pictures!!!

  • vergariae

My 4 year old would love this — During the colder months, we really appreciate the value of building with blocks and legos, versus television. I know this would be a great boost of excitement to build more at home. And very cool for the adults as well!

  • CarolynDawnHunter

My son Caleb is a huge Lego fan and would love this. Having very limited funds, we would be very grateful if we were chosen.

  • Twissa

What a neat event, pretty much a once in a lifetime event?  my boys are 12 and 9 and have started with duplo and even played and still play with some of my childhood legos (yes girls play legos too!)   Many bdays and xmas gifts included some type of new lego set.  This would be such an awesome event and even though my boys spend that weekend with their Dad I would love to give them the opportunity to attend by taking a chance and hoping to be chosen as a family ticket pack winner recipient?  Can’t win if you don’t try so here goes nothing!

  • TaraLeeMorfordRogers

We bought LEGOS years ago for our oldest boy and were saddened to find that he had weak fine motor skills and it hurt his hands to play with them. As he grew we kept introducing LEGOS. He loves his Bionicle’s and movies.  We bought some for our youngest to see if he would love them and he has gone LEGO bonkers! He wakes up and plays with them every day. My eldest has stronger hands now and has jumped into the fun of creating as well.  We definitely need to buy more sets because my two girls and husband and I have been building as well. We argue over who gets what pieces! LOL  We would love to get these tickets! Wonderful memories  would be made and grow a continued love for LEGOS.  Please, please pick us!

  • plkomin

This is spectacular, I am the mother of 4 boys.  They love LEGOS.  My oldest just spent all his birthday money on LEGOS.  They have The LEGO Idea Book, and they are amazing with their creations.  My boys are 10, 9, 5, and 3 months.  My 3 months old was born with a cleft lip and requires a lot of extra time and attention at this time.  This would be an excellent opportunity to spend some special time with my big boys!  We would very much appreciate the experience!

  • CandiceGarman

My 13 year-old son has been a lego fan for years.  He is now building the larger projects and likes to create his own masterpieces.  I would love to be able to surprise him with a “road trip” this weekend!!

  • BakingCookies34

Oh my gosh, my kids would be in heaven, if  we all attend this fantastic Lego event! They absolutely love creating with Legos! Legos is one of the  toys they ask for when its their b-days & holidays!
This would be wonderful  mom & kid’s night out for us! This would be a treasured memory if we went.

My daughter would love to attend this event! We were in Florida for her Make-A-Wish trip last fall and we missed going to LegoLand. I’m not so sure she would want to bring her two sisters along, but… What a great family event!!!

  • EMG2239

It sounds like a great family friendly event.  My almost 5 year old will love it.  He likes to build towers out of anything he can stack.  I can’t wait to go!

  • basschica

Ooh, this could be a win-win-win.  I’d get to go (best birthday present for me ever), then I can take my nieces (now I’m the best aunt ever) and I get an excuse to play with my favorite toy of all time, Lego!  basschica<removeNOSPAMremove>

  • kasper2kat

My 3 year old daughter’s birthday is in a couple weeks and my 5 year old son’s birthday in next month, this would be a great present for them.

  • StephanieJaffeePandolfi

My son turned 10 on Friday, and one of the only items on his list was “Lego”!!!

  • DianeCoatesWoodruff

My daughter will turn 2 soon and already likes to put legos together. But to be honest, I think that her Daddy would have way more fun at this event. I still buy him lego kits and he will be 30 soon. @jon

  • JessicaBird

I have a 8 year old son (Phoenix) and a 7 year old son (Jake) who are both obsessed with legos. We are going as far as making home made mini lego men costumes this Halloween. They would both be over the moon to come to your event. (Plus us parents think its rockin also!)

  • tomt2083

My son has been an avid lego builder since the early age of one, and I thought it would be an amazing way to spend it! To date, he loves to use his Lego blocks and always asks me to build a “kitty house,” which is a larger sized home that is big enough to fit our Tabby cat.  Sure, while it takes hours to build, he gets a kick out of it while building it.  The best thing of all?  He loves when the cat crawls right in and sleeps for the night.  Every time we make it, it’s different colors.

I figured that if he thought my cat house was an amazing creation, he would probably be blown away by the figurines and thousands of Legos that sprawl across the Expo floor.   This would be an event my son won’t forget!  Thank you for the opportunity!

Can’t wait until legokidsfest   comes to puremichigan.  Lego is one of the best way for me to spend time with my two sons Corey & Coreyon and truly have as much fun as them, without them knowing it. #legokidsfest

  • ProfessorDino

Both of my young daughters have followed proudly in their daddy’s footsteps as avid LEGO architects!

  • nicha0995

My 4 year old son is a big Lego fanatic! It is one of the only things that occupies his attention for an hour at a time. Not surprising, since both his Mom, Dad and 17 year old brother were also huge Lego fans when they were kids!
