Giveaway: Celebrate National Fudge Day with Pure Michigan

Mackinac Island is world-famous for its fudge, and with National Fudge Day coming up on Sunday, June 16th, we thought it seemed fitting to celebrate.

The sweet and creamy treat has been a staple on the island for more than a century – ever since Harry Murdick opened the first fudge shop in Michigan on Mackinac Island in the late 1880s. Today, Mackinac Island is home to seven different fudge confectioners with several locations of each on the island.

Here are just a few other reasons why Mackinac Island fudge is Pure Michigan:

  • Mackinac Island is home to more than 15 fudge shops within a 3.8 square mile radius.
  • Each summer, visitors flock to the historic Northern Michigan destination and bring back a sweet souvenir – more than 10,000 pounds of fudge leave the island each day during travel season.
  • Many fudge shops on Mackinac Island have a special ventilation system to waft the smell of freshly made fudge out onto the Main Street sidewalk. Ryba’s was the first to have this system in 1960.
  • Mackinac Island fudge makers ship in about 10-tons of sugar per week and 10 tons of butter per year to make fudge. About 80 percent of the sugar used comes from Michigan.
  • President Gerald Ford visited Mackinac Island in July 1975, and made a personal stop at May’s Candy Shop for fudge.

To get our fans involved with the Fudge Day fun, we’ve teamed up with four shops from around the island – Joann’s Fudge, May’s Candy Shops, Murdick’s Fudge and Ryba’s Fudge – to offer fans on Twitter the chance to win a prize package of fudge every hour between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. this Friday, June 14th. To be eligible to win, fans can simply tweet their favorite flavor of fudge to @PureMichigan on Friday.

Pure Michigan will then choose one winner at random each hour to win a package from one of the shops in the following order:

  • 10:00 a.m. – Joann’s Fudge
  • 11:00 a.m. – May’s Candy Shops
  • 12:00 p.m. – Murdick’s Fudge
  • 1:00 p.m. – Ryba’s Fudge

Winners will be contacted through Twitter with details on obtaining their prize. Tweets must include the hashtag #puremichiganfudge and entrants must follow Pure Michigan on Twitter.*

Additionally, we encourage fans that are on Mackinac Island on Sunday, June 16 to celebrate National Fudge Day by taking a tasty tour around the island to find your favorite shops and flavors. Fudge shops can now also be found in other vacation spots across the state of Michigan, such as Traverse City, Petoskey and Frankenmuth, and fudge fanatics can order their favorite flavor online from shops across the state.

And, don’t forget to return to Mackinac Island in August to celebrate the sweet sensation that is fudge during the Mackinac Island Fudge Festival, August 23-24, 2013.

Are you looking forward to National Fudge Day? Be sure to follow @PureMichigan on Twitter this Friday for your chance to win authentic Mackinac Island fudge!

*Disclaimer: Users can only enter the Twitter contest once and those who make multiple accounts in order to enter more than once will be ineligible to win. Those who post the same tweet repeatedly or violate any of the other Twitter Rules will also be ineligible.

  1. A friend has brought fudge back for me from Michigan it was the best. Would love to have some more but do not remember which shop it can from in Harbor Spring Michigan.

  2. In the whole world there is no better fudge than Mackinac Fudge! Lived in Michigan for 59 years, Mom & Dad lived in St. Ignace for 15 years, went to the “Island” every year…came home with “POUNDS” of fudge….

  3. Yeah….what’s with this being a strictly Twitter contest? I also do not tweet. BUMMER!!!! I’ve not had the chance to ever taste Mackinac Fudge, but sure would love me some Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge.

  4. The nearest”good chocolate” is here in our hometown, or SB Chocolate Co.; fudge company down here in SW Michigan. So any fudge IS GOOD fudge..especially in SUMMER!

  5. Always a treat to get fudge on the island!! I agree with the others: I don’t do the whole Twitter thing, I just don’t have the time, but Facebook would be a great contest!! Spent our 25th Anniversary on the Island last summer, and
had Chocolate walnut and butterscotch fudge for dessert~!

  6. I agree with several of the others-dont get home to Michigan often enough to enjoy the fudge…and they dont have anything remotely like Mackinac Island fudge here in Texas…time for another road trip!!!

  7. I learned about the contest from facebook, and yet you can only win on Twitter. What’s with that? I use my Twitter account so seldom, that most of the time I don’t remember my login or password, but I’m fb everyday. Is Twitter like a secret sponsor or something, and this is just a way to get more people to use/create Twitter accounts?

  8. I do have a Twitter account which I don’t use very often. This is a real temptation, as Mackinac Island fudge is the greatest. I do see it has to be done on Friday…maybe I will give it a try! (BTY is it Mackinac or Mackinaw?)

  9. No FAIR! I don’t twitter and tho I was born and raised in MI I’m now stuck in FL, dreaming (and drooling) about Rocky Road Mackinac Island Fudge. PHOOEY!!

  10. To Pam Snyder, You can set up a Twitter account on your home computer. You don’t need a cell phone.

  11. I don’t tweet, but I love love love Murdicks Fudge, chocolate walnut, peanut butter… the best in the world. I live in South Carolina and they wouldn’t know good fudge if it came up and slapped them in the face. Couldn’t you just pick one of us that don’t tweet to win…. Please!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going home in August but won’t be anywhere near a good fudge place. :)

  12. I must confess that I wouldn’t go up north as often as I do if it were not for the lure of fudge! I would use any excuse to tank up my car and drive to fudge shops. My favorite is cherry, studded with big pieces of fruit. Gotta drive up there really soon!

  13. The Best Fudge in the North & the United States.
I would always buy my fudge when i would go uo north to walk the MIGHTY MAC- MACKINAW BRIDGE WALK ON LABOR DAY . I WALKED THAT BRIDGE FOR 11 straight YEARS. THE FUDGE WOULD MELT IN YOUR NOT IN YOUR HANDS. mmmm YUM! I would suggested to any one to but their fudge up there on Mackinaw Island. :)

  14. Im a Michigander, I’ve lived in Nevada since 1966. Haven’t been home in over 5 years due to health problems. I love Mackinac Fudge. Buy it ever time I went. Best in the world. Really miss coming home. I’m 71 years old and really mis my trips home.

  15. It is not fair that this contest is only open to twitter. I don’t have a twitter account as a lot of others don’t either. I am a big fan of Mackinac fudge. Please have this contest open to facebook users also! If I am not the only one who feels this way, PLEASE lets all say so!!!!

  16. Cheryl you can order the fudge online at their websites. I to live in Texas but by ordering online get to have a taste of Michigan.

  17. Oh man. Not fair to show this delicious fudge and for me to be all the way in Texas. Hoping to revisit the Island next summer.

  18. Dont like the fact that you have to use Twitter to enter. I dont tweet because I don’t have a cell phone. Should be able to enter on internet.
