Michigan’s Governor and legislature has declared August, 2011 “Michigan Camping & RV Month!” It’s no surprise that we would celebrate camping in Michigan, because if you love camping, Michigan is the best of the best. We have:

  • more than 160 county or government operated campgrounds with over 14,700 sites
  • over 300,000 licensed recreation vehicles, including motorhomes and travel trailers
  • 98 state parks and recreation areas
  • 133 state forest campgrounds

Altogether, Michigan has more than 950 licensed private recreation vehicle parks and campgrounds, with more than 111,000 licensed campsites! This infographic does a nice job of illustrating these numbers, as well as the activities that campers enjoy most in Pure Michigan.

Michigan offers some great programs to promote camping. If you have never tried it before, the DNR offers a First Time Campers Program at many campgrounds across the state. If you are looking for opportunities to fish and camp, there is a great interactive map illustrating the over 130 campgrounds located within 1 mile of designated Trout streams or lakes.

When you are planning your trip, take a look at the Michigan Campgrounds page. In addition to allowing you to search for a campground by region and city, it also includes helpful links to the statewide campground listing, dog-friendly camping opportunities, campgrounds with horse trails, RV campgrounds, and more! If you are mobile and want to search for state campgrounds and recreation areas, the DNR recently launched their Campground Locator. When thinking about what do while camping, explore the many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in Michigan, Don’t forget to get your Recreation Passport for only $10 when you re-new your license plate. This passport will get you into all state parks, recreation areas, and boat launches.
