Because of our limited time together, we could only pick one destination, but there was no question about where we would take them to experience Pure Michigan: Mackinac Island.

Photo credit - Michigan Travel IdeasPhoenix Street is crowded as tourists mingle with locals walking to South Haven’s harbor and beach. It’s just after 7 p.m.—still a couple hours before sunset. A horse-drawn carriage waits to give paying customers a fairy-tale ride, and Harvey, the horse, patiently swishes his tail in response to the passersby who stroke his nose, pet his neck and give him well-meaning pats on the head. A ride sounds like fun, but I came for the sunset.

Jill Kobza shares her “Pure Michigan Moment,” an annual trip to Traverse City and Old Mission Point Lighthouse, this time with a few detours.

My husband’s family lives in Traverse City, and we love to make at least one trip to the Old Mission Point Lighthouse during our annual visit.

This past spring, we drove up M-37 to Old Mission Point Lighthouse. It’s one of my favorite trips to take in spring because I love to see the cherry blossoms in bloom.

Miner's Beach in Munising

There’s something magnetic about Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Maybe it’s the mile after mile of forests or the vast stretches of refreshingly undeveloped land. Maybe it’s the vibrant sunlight or the pale sand and blue waters of a sunny Lake Superior summer day that reminds me of the beach in Kauai. Maybe it’s the rolling hills, alive with color in autumn; the charming cottages of all sizes, conditions and styles; a small lake completely ringed with wild roses; or an abundance of wonderful waterfalls.
