Jeanne Van Wieren shares her “Pure Michigan Moment,” a surprising encounter during the holidays in Saugatuck.

Everyone knows Saugatuck is an enchanting summertime destination, but it is also charming during the holidays. My husband, Don, and I go Christmas shopping there because we can find great gifts in a gorgeous setting. One year, we went on the same weekend that actors were putting on a production of A Christmas Carol in the historic Women’s Club building.

The winter setting was perfect: Snow fell in big flakes, and visitors enjoyed a ride in a lovely white carriage pulled by a horse clip-clopping down the street. Don and I were enjoying dinner at Wally’s, a wonderfully eccentric establishment favored by locals, when the door opened and, much to our surprise, in strode Bob Cratchit! I’m pretty sure it was actually a thespian in costume, but you never know in Saugatuck. He sat at the bar, and took off his top hat. “What’ll you have?” asked the bartender. Nobody, nobody batted an eye except Don and me. “Give me a Bud Light,” said Bob as he watched the NCAA basketball game on the TV.

A few moments later, we were laughing about it when—hand to God—Mrs. Cratchit and Tiny Tim walked in to see when Bob was coming home. “I’ll be there in a while,” Bob said. Off they went. Again, no one noticed.

Don and I share this story often because it reminds of us of one of our favorite places—pure Saugatuck. The striking town is home to galleries, great art and fun. It is also a place that knows life is full of surprises, so never take yourself too seriously. God bless us, every one!

Blue water, waves, and white sand can all be found on the southwest Michigan shore within a half-day’s drive of Chicago and Detroit. From New Buffalo to Ludington, and the towns in between, beaches stretch out and harbors crowded with pleasure boats scallop the water’s edge. George Hendrix, a contributing writer for Michigan Travel Ideas, spent a weekend driving Michigan’s western shore, stopping and admiring each beach town along the way.

South Haven Sunset

New Buffalo, in the heart of Harbor Country, is the starting point for my weekend trip, where sun-toasted sand and a quaint business district make it the idyllic beach town. The Red Arrow Highway takes me north to St. Joseph, where steps climb from Silver Beach to a shady bluff-top park and downtown. Schu’s, a local favorite, serves a famous potato soup at its downtown location, where outdoor tables offer a view of the harbor.

Special thanks to Guest blogger Courtney Decker Bradford for detailing her optimism for the upcoming seasons, and a personal reflection of another beautiful Michigan summer!

Sunset in Ludington

As I sit on the beach as dusk falls, I am in awe of the vibrance of one of God’s brilliant creations – the sunset.  The boats drifting in with the backdrop of sun and seagulls leads to reflection.  Not the sun’s reflection on the water but my reflection – I reflect over the past months as summer reaches its end in this great State.  I remember my family’s dinner at “The Hamlin” restaurant in Ludington and our trip to “31 Flavors” where large amounts of ice cream were consumed without guilt.  I smile as I reminisce over the long walk through the woods to a more private beach area in Saugatuck.
