Sunset at Grand Haven Pier
Johnny Quirin, a contributing photographer for Michigan Travel Ideas, shares his experience trying to photograph the Grand Haven Pier at sunset.
“F8 and be there”— it’s a phrase used by photographers. Be at the right place, at the right time, with your camera in hand. F8 is a setting on the camera that refers to an aperture setting on the lens. But, it’s the “being there” that counts. I have been trying to capture a Grand Haven sunset since I moved to the area almost 10 years ago. The problem is that I live 10 miles inland, which makes the trek to the beach too long when inspiration strikes.

With over 3,200 miles of coastline and 11,000 inland lakes, you’re never far from the beach in Michigan. In fact, sandy shores are so ubiquitous in the state that a change of motto may be in order, “If you seek a pleasant beach, look about you.”

Amanda Torrens shares her “Pure Michigan Moment,” a brief escape from graduate school to watch a gorgeous sunset at Lake Michigan.
Phoenix Street is crowded as tourists mingle with locals walking to South Haven’s harbor and beach. It’s just after 7 p.m.—still a couple hours before sunset. A horse-drawn carriage waits to give paying customers a fairy-tale ride, and Harvey, the horse, patiently swishes his tail in response to the passersby who stroke his nose, pet his neck and give him well-meaning pats on the head. A ride sounds like fun, but I came for the sunset.
