Imlay City, located at the intersection of Interstate I-69 and M-53 was named after William Hl. Imlay, who was an eastern capitalist before moving to this area about 1828.

Located in Lapeer County, in the lower part of Michigan's "thumb", Imlay City appropriately adopted its motto "Gateway to the Thumb" many years ago.

Many visitors are attracted to the area because of the varied services and facilities provided while maintaining a small-town atmosphere. Annual events includes holiday parades, Woods and Water outdoor weekend, truck and tractor pulls, the Blueberry festival and the Eastern Michigan fair continue to draw visitors
