The City of Monroe is one of the most historic cities in Michigan. Well known as the home of Gen. George A. Custer, World Headquarters of La-Z-Boy Incorporated and having the Historic River Raisin running West to East into Lake Erie, Monroe is fast becoming an arts and cultural hotspot. The River Raisin Jazz Festival that takes place the 2nd weekend in August each summer, attracts over 40,000 music lovers per year. The River Raisin Battlefield, the site of the bloodiest battle of the War of 1812 and the largest conflict ever fought on Michigan soil, is being studied for inclusion in the National Parks System. Downtown Monroe is home to the Monroe County Historical Museum, the River Raisin Centre for the Arts and wonderful dining, shopping and entertainment venues.
