Ontonagon County on the south shore of Lake Superior includes the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park created in 1945. It has 60,000 acres of virgin forest; Lake of the Clouds, one of the most scenic spots in all of Michigan; and Summit Peak Observation Tower, one of the highest points in Michigan. It offers an expansive view of thousands of acres of virgin forest and on a clear day, over Lake Superior's vast expanse, one can see the far off Apostle Islands to the west. There are miles of sandy beaches at Union Bay for swimming and agate hunting. For history buffs, there are self-guided trails to old mining sites on the Union Mine Scenic Trail, and the Nonesuch Mine location. Visitors can enter the adit of the old Carp Lake Mine and hardy hikers can make the trip to the historic Carp Lake Stamp mill site. Ontonagon is part of the Wilds of Michigan.
