Writing poetry is an act of creative expression. It can be practiced throughout life and is a powerful way to describe one's appreciation for the beauty of wilderness and insights about one's life. In four sessions over two days, participants will study and listen to poets reading their own poetry (i.e. Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, Dorothy Parker, Gwendolyn Brooks), become familiar with use of poetic techniques (alliteration, metaphor, simile, rhyme, onomatopoeia, etc.) and forms of poetry (couplet, Haiku, limerick, sonnet). Workshops will include experiencing and observing nature, writing poetry and helpful critiquing of each other's work. A booklet of poetry from the sessions will be published and distributed 4-6 weeks after the workshop. The class is open to students age 12 and older. Please bring a lunch. There are 10 spaces available and 5 students are needed to hold the class. Classes are held at the Porcupine Mountains Folk School at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (near Union Bay Campground). The class registration deadline is Sept. 24. Register online at www.porkies.org/folk-school, call 906-884-7663 or email friendsoftheporkies@yahoo.com.
