Interested in learning more about the history in Cass County, specifically the Underground Railroad? Then you must make plans to attend this year's Underground Railroad Days, July 11-12, 2015. The 102nd Colored Troops and Michigan 1st Civil War Re-enactors set up camp in Vandalia. Tour museums, enjoy festivities in downtown Vandalia and take a tour of the Bonine House, a Greek Revival style house built in 1845. The Bonine House is located on Penn Road and M-60. James & Sarah Bonine built this home and were members of Young's Prairie Anti-Slavery Friends and staunch abolitionists. The Bonine House played a role in housing freedom seekers who were making their way north to Canada. They used coded quilts to tell the freedom seekers if there was food available, paths to freedom and river passage. Make learning history fun for the whole family.
