During the winter, our four Great Lakes, more than 11,000 inland lakes and hundreds of rivers and streams provide anglers with the perfect location to ice fish for bluegill, perch, pike and walleye. Watch as avid ice fisher, Scott Heintzelman, takes us to his favorite spot and shows us what Pure Michigan ice fishing is all about.
As Michigan transforms into a winter wonderland, the fishing stays hot with anglers heading out on frozen lakes and ice shanties to partake in the time-honored Michigan tradition of ice fishing. Michigan is home to some of the best freshwater fishing anywhere, with a variety of species ready to bite during winter.
Drill through the ice, set your line and anticipate the thrill of the "tip up." Bluegill, perch, crappie and walleye are popular species this time of year and with 11,000 inland lakes across the state, the opportunities to catch fish during the winter months are countless.
First time ice anglers can take advantage of Free Fishing Weekend, February 14-15, 2015. All fishing license fees will be waived for two days and residents and outstate visitors alike can enjoy fishing for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply and a second Free Fishing weekend will be held on June 13-14, 2015.
So take a snow day, drop your line and experience the coolest fishing that's Pure Michigan.
