The amazing variety of colors in the waters around Traverse City is caused by sunlight reflecting up from the sandy bottom through the crystal-clear water. And the beaches here are almost entirely made of fine “sugar sand” that glows with a tawny fire under the summer sun – perfect for sunbathing, beachcombing and swimming.

Life's a Pure Michigan Beach

You'll find public access to beaches at pocket parks and at miles-long stretches of Great Lakes shoreline.

Beaches

In Michigan you are never more than six miles from a body of water and 85 miles from a Great Lake. With 3,200 miles of freshwater coastline touching the Great Lakes of Erie, Huron, Superior and Michigan there are plenty of great beaches to relax in the summer sun, or to head out for swimming, boating, fishing and other water adventures.

Ice Hikes

For the next several months, the nearest Great Lake offers a gallery of some of nature's greatest ice sculptures

Barefoot Getaways

Aah, the beach—Michigan has some of the best anywhere! Come along to Great Lakes towns where you can walk from main streets to irresistible stretches of sand. Build sand castles, splash in the surf, skip stones, or read a novel beneath a rippling umbrella.
