The calendar is busy for cross country skiers who want the excitement and challenge of organized sporting events, beginning with the SISU Ski Fest January 15 in Ironwood. “Sisu” is a Finnish word for determination, and that’s what it takes to tackle the 42K ski marathon, 21K half marathon, and kiddie races.
Cross country skiers from across the U.S. and other countries head to the birthplace of organized skiing and home to the National Ski Hall of Fame for the Junior Noque, 50K MGH Noquemanon Ski Marathon and 25K mBank Half Noque, January 28-29 in Ishpeming and Marquette.
The White Pine Stampede, a cross country ski race with 10, 20, and 40K loops in Mancelona and Bellaire, celebrates its 35th anniversary February 5, and the following weekend the 35th North American VASA comes to nearby Traverse City, February 11-13. One of the top cross country ski events in the nation, it includes Classic and Freestyle events on 10, 12, 27 50K and 50K 2-lap races, Junior VASA, 6 and 16K Gran Travers races.
Telemark skiers tour and race Mt. Bohemia and the Porcupine Mountains, and check out new gear, take in a clinic, and chow down on chili after a challenging day in the backcountry for Midwest TeleFest, February 11-13. Snowshoe or cross country ski the Valley Spur Ski Trail and sample delicious treats at buffets along the way at the annual Taste and Glide on March 5 in Munising. Join the Great Bear Chase March 12 in Calumet and choose the 50k freestyle, 26k classic or 26k freestyle cross country ski event across the gently rolling Swedetown area trails.
