As summer winds down and school heads back in session, it’s time to think about another trip to Mackinac Island. Take in Mother Nature’s annual fall color show by foot, bicycle, horseback or carriage. Plan a weekend to engage in the outdoor recreation Mackinac Island is known for, or plan a weekend getaway with friends. Whatever the reason, fall is the perfect time to enjoy the more leisurely pace of Mackinac Island.
With cooler temperatures fall is a good time to hike or bike the more than seventy miles of roads and trails around and through the middle of the island. Rent a bike and enjoy the crisp air along the scenic route that circles Mackinac Island, M-185. Take a hike through the interior trails of Mackinac Island State Park, Michigan’s first state park (and only the second one in the nation), to observe the autumn hues of the maple and oak trees. Or sit back, relax and gaze at the fall color during a narrated carriage tour visiting the points of interest and natural beauty of the island.
The warm sun and crisp fall air also makes it the perfect time to participate in one of many Mackinac Island events. Enjoy the last weekend of the season and participate in the 18th Annual Mackinac Island Great Turtle Half Marathon or 5.7 mile run and walk, October 26.
Those looking for a little more pampering will delight in the Mackinac Island Girlfriends Shopping and Spa Weekend. This getaway weekend, October 4-6, is filled with great shopping, relaxing spa treatments, yoga, hiking in the woods, horseback riding, private carriage tours with your best friends, wine tasting and dining downtown and a fabulous fashion show.
Step back in time at Grand Hotel to celebrate Somewhere in Time, October 4-6. The weekend special includes a screening of the 1980 movie, filmed at Grand Hotel in 1979, a visit with cast and crew that are invited back, a costume promenade, costumed cocktail receptions and more.
In addition to fun filled weekend packages, many island accommodations offer discounted and value added rates and packages. Check out the Fall Escape package at the Lilac Tree Suites & Spa including a beautiful suite, breakfast for two each morning and two half-hour spa treatments, and a half pound of Mackinac Island fudge.
Plan an island romance at Mission Point Resort. The Island Romance package includes two nights, strawberries and champagne, wine and cheese, breakfast for two, dinner at Chianti, and more! The Island House offers an Autumn Escape package including two-nights lodging, breakfast buffet daily, dinner one evening in the 1852 Grill Room, round trip ferry tickets, one-hour bike rental and a half pound of fudge.
