Michigan’s resort courses combine luxury lodging with challenging holes designed by an impressive roster of noted golf architects to take best advantage of the scenery and natural landscape. The Jim McLean Golf School at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa near Traverse City will prepare you for play at a one-hour private lesson, a four-day school, or on-course instruction with a pro. New this season are the two-day Slot Swing and three-day Three Scoring Clubs schools. Special to instruction at Grand Traverse is the SUPERSTATION® advanced learning facility that utilizes indoor/outdoor hitting bays and digital video and computer-aided analysis of your swing. Classes begin in May and run into September--plenty of time to polish your skills on one of three courses: Spruce Run, designed by William Newcomb; The Wolverine by Gary Player; and, celebrating its 25th Anniversary, The Bear by Jack Nicklaus. Grand Traverse Resort’s list of honors includes Golf Digest naming The Bear one of America’s toughest courses, to Golf for Women ranking it as one of the best family resorts.
The three Boyne Resorts in the Petoskey area boast eight golf courses, from The Heather by Robert Trent Jones Sr., to The Arthur Hills, the famed Bay Harbor Golf Club, and The Monument, with a design that pays tribute to top golf architects. The resorts offer a choice of programs for adults and kids, from private instruction to multiple-day schools. Youth teams and individuals are welcome at the five-day Nike Junior Golf Camps at Boyne Highlands, which boasts four top golf courses and practice facilities, and includes lodging and meals. Adults can choose an inclusive one, two, or three-day school at Boyne Highlands, or a 1-hour, 1-1/2 hour or 3-hour private Boyne Golf Academy lesson at Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountain Resorts, and Bay Harbor Golf Club.Crystal Mountain Resort at Thompsonville, near the Lake Michigan coast and not far from Traverse City, has been recognized as having one of the Top 25 Golf Schools in America, with over 100 programs for kids and adults. Choose from half-day to three-day schools for men and women, or two and three-day schools for women only. The extensive youth programs include two and three-day mini-camps for 7-12 year olds to weeklong Junior Golf Camps for ages 10-18. The Junior Elite program offers a season of weekend sessions from April through August. Then, hit the resort’s two, four-star rated golf courses: Mountain Ridge and the recently renovated Betsie Valley.
The Shanty Creek Golf Academy at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire offers individual lessons for beginner through advanced golfers, and four courses to challenge all levels. Choices include Cedar River by Tom Weiskopf, named one of the “Top 10 in the U.S. You Can Play,” while Arnold Palmer’s The Legend has been ranked one of the best four resort courses in the U.S.
The Rick Smith Golf Academy at Treetops Resort is the only Michigan facility to appear three times on the list of Top 25 Golf Schools, and a glance at the schedule of classes proves it’s a well-deserved honor. A sampling of choices for adults includes the Classic three-day program, Masters instruction, Couples Golf School or Ladies Golf School Escape. Junior Golf Camp is a two-day session for ages 9-17, and the summer-long Junior Development Program is open to just ten students.
Treetops Resort is a member of the Gaylord Golf Mecca, a group of some 20 resort and public courses in the upper area of Michigan’s “Mitt” that cooperate on Stay & Play packages and the Golf Passport, a 2 for 1 golf value promotion. Many of the courses, such as the Tom Doak designed Black Forest at Wilderness Valley, offer lessons.
