Fall color across much of the Upper Peninsula is excellent this week with the highest abundance of color at 75-100% development, with the remainder between 50 and 60%.
Alcona County is reporting color development around 25%. Travelers in the area will find hints of color forming a graceful backdrop for the orchards and roadside markets along the county’s country roads.
Alpena’s development is between 26 and 50%. Travelers will see yellow aspens, pale cream Beech, and bronze, red, gold and purple among the hickory, oaks and Tamarack. Viewers will see some fall foliage as well as color of a very different variety touring the wineries, farm markets and orchards in the area.
The aspens, maples, oaks and Tamaracks of the Tawas area are making an impressive show of reds, yellows and bronzes this week as the area approaches 75% peak. Some of the most robust color can be found along the Au Sable; however, viewers will find that last week’s wind and rain caused many of the leaves to fall prematurely.
Lexington is at 25% and local maples and oaks are starting to dress in reds, golds, yellows and bronzes. Traveling up M-25 from Port Huron past the Lakeport State Park viewers will see vibrant red Shumaks. Best viewing this weekend includes a drive to the Port Sanilac Lighthouse for beautiful and serene palette of changing color.
Newaygo County is nearing 50% peak. This coming weekend, leaf peepers will find yellow aspens, bronze hickory, red maples, crimson oaks, and gold tamaracks. The best viewing point is at High Rollaway, which offers a picturesque view of the Muskegon River, off M-82.
Color is progressing rapidly in Charlevoix County, with the greatest intensity in the Chandler Hills area in the eastern part of the county. The best weekend drive is between Vanderbilt and Boyne Falls along Thumb Lake Road (C-48). Displaying dynamic reds, yellows, golds, russets and bronze, the area’s current saturation is 75% and peak is anticipated to be one to two week out.
With 25-50%, the Grayling area is showing off pale cream aspens, and crimson maples and oaks. The southern portion of the county is reporting limited color; however, viewers will find that M-93 toward Hartwick Pines State Park and County Road 612 heading west are displaying gentle wisps of brilliant color.
