Pick up a picnic lunch from a downtown eatery and head to William G. Milliken State Park on the Detroit River. The 31-acre urban oasis welcomes boaters, wildlife and freighter watchers, and fishermen, walkers and bicyclists---it’s adjacent to the Detroit RiverWalk, which stretches for more than three miles westward past Renaissance Center to Joe Louis Arena.
North of the far northern tip of the state, miles off the Keweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior, an ancient archipelago marks its 70th anniversary as Isle Royale National Park; and on more than 95,000 acres of the Upper Peninsula Seney National Wildlife Refuge celebrates 75 years of providing a protected habitat for a variety of species.
