Every May, something delicious is on tap in the Great Lakes Bay Region. It started as an idea to celebrate the beauty of springtime in Frankenmuth. That idea brewed and the result was something incredible Pure Michigans largest international beer sampling event.
Its the World Expo of Beer and its not your average beer tasting. Its an all-out two-day celebration of craft brews from around the globe more than 50 breweries from five continents, to be exact. Thats because it transcends events like Colorados Great American Beer Festival, by celebrating both the passionate local craft brewers right from our own backyards, alongside the tasty concoctions dreamed and brewed up from every corner of the earth.
This one-of-a-kind beer-sampling mecca was modeled after the traditional German Maifest (or Spring celebration) where Germans gather to celebrate the start of the season, often toasting with new seasonal beers.
And toast to the season is what the World Expo of Beer does best. One of the best things about the World Expo of Beer is that it gives people a chance to experiment and venture out to try a new beer product maybe one theyve never even heard of, said Annie Rummel, who originated the festival in 1996 and now serves as CEO of the Great Lakes Bay Regional CVB. Its great that people can try quality beers without having to purchase an entire 6-pack just to discover that a particular beer just wasnt for them. Its all about exploring new regions, countries and even continents through their brewing traditions.
For the true beer connoisseur, there are plenty of ways to extend the hands-on experience. Many come to get schooled in beer, attending events like the Bavarian Inn Lodges Fine Food & Craft Brew Pairing event or the Beer 101 Basics of Beer course. Here, you can learn everything from how to distinguish beers by their color, body, and taste, or the proper methods for storing, pouring, and serving different beer styles.
If youre planning to Go Great Lakes Bay for the World Expo of Beer, you may as well make it a beercation. Plan ahead by pre-purchasing an admission package (it even includes your beer tickets so you can skip the long lines and dive right into sampling!) Then, be sure to book your stay at a nearby hotel and check out other events and things to do in the Great Lakes Bay Region. You can also follow Go Great Lakes Bay and the World Expo of Beer on Facebook for updates on the free World Expo of Beer shuttle buses to select nearby hotels.
