Winter Fun in Traverse City - Courtesy of Traverse City CVBAlthough best known as a summer vacation destination, the Traverse City region has recently won accolades as a magnet for snowmobilers, skiers/snowboarders, and snowshoe hikers who consider the area one of the country's most beautiful winter destinations. And now, the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau is offering winter deals with its "Traverse City Escape" package now through May 16. These elite getaway packages combine special rates at more than 17 participating hotels and resorts with a wide range of discounts on recreation, shopping, dining and entertainment.

For winter sports enthusiasts, the packages include deep discounts on lift tickets, ski lessons and equipment, trail passes and snowmobile rentals. You'll also find great deals at many of the area's best restaurants and special discounts on shopping, spa services, movies, wine tastings and other entertainment. This past year, Budget Travel called it one of the 11 "Coolest Winter Places in America" and Livability.com added Traverse City to its list of the nation's best winter vacation destinations.

National travel sources have herald Traverse City as having "all the ingredients for a great winter vacation – a quaint downtown with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, microbreweries, restaurants, quaint shops, numerous performance venues--and an abundance of snow."

The area's most popular winter activities include skiing, tubing and snowboarding as well as the "silent sports" of snowshoe hiking and cross country skiing--thanks to its vast acreage of forest and parkland. Snowmobilers know that more than 200 miles of the country's finest and most diverse snowmobiling wait for them in the Boardman and Jordan River valleys.

Visitors to this upscale resort community can also enjoy a variety of amenities and activities all winter long. Its bustling downtown shopping district boasts over 150 boutiques, shops and galleries full of undiscovered treasures--and the trendy new Warehouse District has lots of offbeat choices, too. A few blocks away is the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, a Victorian architectural wonder surrounded by acres of parkland that boasts some of the region's most imaginative shops. Elegant shopping can also be found in the Tower Gallery of Shops at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, and there's great small-town shopping to be found in several quaint towns that lie nearby in Leelanau and Antrim counties.

Winter is also a splendid time to enjoy some of Traverse City's fabled cuisine. Thanks to its award-winning wines and talented local chefs, the community now enjoys an international reputation as a place of surprisingly sophisticated food and drink. For two years in a row, Midwest Living has listed Traverse City among its "Top Food Towns," and Bon Appetit has listed it as one of "America's Top Five Foodie Towns."
