Ann Arbor has quite the reputation for energetic live performances, entertaining festivals and once-in-a-lifetime special events. Below are some of the newest announcements and information on how you can join the fun!
Not everyone may be familiar with the multi-talented musician, singer, songwriter and former Ann Arbor resident, but Mayer Hawthorne who is performing for free at "Live on Washington" in downtown Ann Arbor on May 10 is definitely worth traveling to Ann Arbor to see. His hit "The Walk" from 2011 received a lot of airplay with its Motown-reminiscent rhythms and catchy lyrics. You may also remember Hawthorne as the entertainment at the 2014 NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.
Next, the stage comes alive at Michigan Theater when talented community members perform 42nd Street on May 17. This award-winning musical was a long running hit in the 1980s and was revived on Broadway in 2001. Based on the 1933 film starring Ginger Rogers, the musical tells the story of a group of performers teaming together to put on a successful, yet extravagant, musical during the Great Depression. Join us for a spectacular night out and enjoy this new annual tradition.
One of Ann Arbor's premier annual events is Summer Festival and Top of the Park. The main stage performances have been announced and once again, the organizers have outdone themselves. Lily Tomlin will be opening the festival on June 14 and the entertainment continues for three weeks with other star performers including CAKE, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Robert Cray and Mavis Staples, and Andrew Bird. In addition, the Architects of Air: Miracoco return to Palmer Field for a massive outdoor, interactive sculpture creating a magical, colorful experience for the whole family.
Hoping to break yet another record, Michigan Stadium is hosting Real Madrid vs. Manchester United for the Guinness International Champions Cup on August 2. These two juggernauts from the European soccer club are competing against six additional teams in a preseason round robin with the final event taking place in Miami on August 4. While tickets are sold out, you can sign up for alerts if more tickets become available. Stay tuned for more inside information and tips for getting the most out of your visit!
