Old Rugged Cross Church

In 1913 the Rev George Bennard completed his hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" while staying in Pokagon, MI. He sang the final version for the first time at a revival meeting in the Pokagon Methodist Episcopal Church. The church is undergoing restoration. Behind the old church is a beautiful garden which features a 13-foot wooden cross on a hill, a statue of Christ, and a picnic shelter. The garden is open year-round to the public and is handicap accessible. There is no charge for private tours of the old church, which are available by appointment.
