    Climb Aboard

The opportunity to climb aboard a majestic tall ship is the most popular attraction at Tall Ship Celebration. Ships are available for touring Friday-Sunday, July 12-14, from 10 am—5 pm. Boarding and touring these vessels requires a Souvenir Passport.

  • Michigan’s largest gathering of tall ships will take place in Bay City – the only official port on the 2013 TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE®. Celebrate these magnificent ships and enjoy summertime in the Great Lakes Bay Region during the Tall Ship Celebration, July 11-14.

Tall ships will muster in Saginaw Bay starting Thursday, including the Denis Sullivan, Flagship Niagara, Lynx, Madeline, Pathfinder, Peacemaker, Playfair, Pride of Baltimore II, Sørlandet and Unicorn. Each ship has its own history and colorful stories, so be sure to plan for time aboard them all.

The festival will include lighthouse tours, storytelling and the Pirates on the Run 5K. Take guided trips along the Saginaw River aboard the excursion vessels Princess Wenona and Islander or tall ship adventures aboard Bay City's own Appledore IV or the schooner Hindu from Key West. Walk through Vets Park, where original art and maritime crafts will be for sale or explore the Center Avenue Historic District on the Bay City Lore and Legends tour.

Learn about the stories and histories of the wind-powered vessels at Storyteller’s Corner, where four storytellers will share tales of Michigan, the Great Lakes and life at sea. For added entertainment, attend the Maritime Music Festival featuring musicians from Belgium, Ireland, Poland, the Netherlands and the US. Be sure to sample a Michigan microbrew at Ballads & Brews in The Quarterdeck Friday through Sunday evening.

While you’re in Bay City, hike along the 17.5 miles of the Bay City Riverwalk/Railtrail Loop. Explore more at-sea adventure at the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum and the USS Edson DD-946. Take a break from the outdoors to visit the Delta College Planetarium or the Historical Museum. For more fun on Lake Huron, head east along the shore to Caseville County Park or Albert E Sleeper State Park.
