Romantic Getaways in Michigan Perfect for Valentine's Day
Michigan is full of romantic destinations to celebrate with your significant other. Of course, you can’t go to all of the places on this list at once, so Jennifer Symons from Awesome Mitten recommends year-round romantic getaways.
Although Ann Arbor is a fairly large town, it still maintains that quaint feeling that makes it romantic. Catch an Independent film at the historic Michigan Theater. Afterwards, head to the centrally located VinBar, which serves up wines from Black Star Farms, Mawby, and Good Harbor Vineyards. This town is full of diverse food that represents its culture; be sure to make several stops to refuel while exploring its pedestrian-friendly streets. Sava’s is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for amazing food at a moderate cost in a place that lacks pretentiousness. Ann Arbor is also known for its artists, so take some time to explore the museums and galleries throughout the city while you are there.
There’s something about the elegance of lighthouses that make them romantic. The Grand Traverse Lighthouse is located in the Leelanau State Park at the tip of Northport. Around the lighthouse are hiking trails, a campground, and the vast beauty of Lake Michigan. The village of Northport is cozy and quaint.. Take a romantic stroll to the marina and then head to the Mitten Brewing Company for soft pretzels bigger than your face and free popcorn. Be sure to have breakfast at the Tribune before leaving, their daily specials made from locally grown products are the best around.
At the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula, the road trip to this town is a romantic adventure in itself. Cabin rentals are abundant in this area for that rustic, old-fashioned feel. Cruise around Brockway Mountain Drive to share some stunning views with your significant other. At the top, breathtaking views of Lake Superior make you fall even more in love with this beautiful state.
Frankenmuth is most commonly known for its Christmas displays, but they have quite the romantic side as well. Walk on the wooden covered bridge along Cass River for gorgeous views. of the water. After you've worked up a thirst, head over to Frankenmuth Brewery. Michigan’s oldest brewery not only has a vast number of craft beers, but they also have a variety of wines and an amazing food menu. If you’re feeling adventurous, book your stay at Zehnder’s and check out the waterpark!
Everything is more romantic in the secluded Upper Peninsula. This small town offers beautiful, locally owned shops and restaurants that are perfect for exploring. Ishpeming offers miles of trails for exploring, many of which lead to romantic overlooks. Mama Mia’s Italian Restaurant is the perfect spot to have a Valentine's Day dinner of authentic Italian food and fine wine after a day of exploring Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula.
Detroit is a fantastic Valentine’s Day destination due to the sheer amount of activities in the city. Stay at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel and pamper your significant other with a spa package at IMMERSE Spa. Head to the Detroit Institute of Arts to show off your creative side where you can peruse beautiful art pieces. If you’re hungry, there is no shortage of romantic restaurants such as Iridescence, which has an extensive wine list, or Selden Standard, providing seasonal, locally sourced small plates and cocktails. For an outdoorsy date, hit up Campus Martius Park, home to a skating rink January through March. If you've worked up an appetite, try the Fountain Bistro located in the park with a great view.
Ludington’s rolling dunes make for a romantic walk on the beach no matter the season. Stay for a weekend in this beautiful town at the Inn at Ludington or the historic Lamplighter Bed and Breakfast. Petoskey is the perfect up north getaway for a romantic weekend. Beautiful beaches are accessible during all seasons and hiking trails span the entire area.
