What is a Petoskey Stone?

A Petoskey stone is a rock and fossil from the colonial coral that once lived in the warm Michigan waters over 350 million years ago. It is covered in hexagonal shapes with a dark center and thin lines that radiate from it. This became the state stone in 1965!

Where to find Petoskey Stones?

Petoskey stones are known to be difficult to find due to their unique coral texture that is not visible when the stone is dry. The easiest place to find a Petoskey Stone is a rocky beach where the waves wet the rocks to reveal the unique pattern.
