Located southwest of Traverse City, Interlochen is the home of the world-famous Interlochen Center for the Arts, founded as a summer camp for young musicians in the 1920s but now a year-round school for artistically talented youngsters from around the world. Its summer music festival features dozens of well-known performers. The nearby Interlochen State Park shelters one of Michigan's last remaining stands of virgin pines.
