Mount Pleasant is home to the Annual Special Olympics Summer Games. Since 1971, Central Michigan University has played host for the state games, even hosting the Special Olympics World Games in 1975. The games bring together nearly 3,000 Special Olympic athletes from across the state to compete in 10 summer sporting events. The games start off with the ceremonial lighting of the Flame of Hope during the Opening Ceremonies. The torch is run from the Capital in Lansing to Mt. Pleasant in the traditional Capitol Steps Kick-off Torch Lighting Ceremony. Opening Ceremonies also include a Coast Guard flyover provided by United States Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City. Athletes, coaches, families, volunteers and the community will celebrate as the competitions get underway.
