"Following Banned Books Week - Join MADL at the Muskegon Museum of Art for a screening of To Be Destroyed, a short film that follows Dave Eggers as he meets with students and teachers in the Rapid City, SD school district where his novel The Circle was pulled from shelves. Through footage of heated school board meetings, community rallies and interviews with locals, we learn how these books were designated to be destroyed."" Following the screening, a panel of Muskegon public and school librarians and administrators will discuss local experiences with book challenges, access to information, and the ongoing importance of freedom of speech and the freedom to read.
To Be Destroyed is a documentary which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was broadcast on MSNBC in August 2024.
This program is part of MADL's Big Read Lakeshore Initiative and has been inspired by this year's selected books: The Circle by Dave Eggers, The Eyes & the Impossible by Dave Eggers, What Can A Citizen Do? by Dave Eggers, and You Hold Me Up, by Monique Gray Smith.
MADL is grateful for the Muskegon Museum of Art for hosting this event and to our library partners, White Lake Community Library, Hackley Public Library, and Fruitport District Library for contributing to the panel discussion. "
