When did Michigan become a state?

Michigan became the 26th state of the United States 189 years ago on January 26, 1837.
 

Michigan's name is inspired by the indigenous word Michigama, meaning "great water" or "large lake".

When was Detroit founded?

Detroit was established on July 24, 1701, by French trader and military officer, Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac. 
 

In 2026, Detroit celebrates its 325th birthday, which predates the the founding of the nation by 75 years, and Michigan's statehood by 136 years. 

How long have people lived in Michigan?

Michigan has been home to the Anishinaabe people long before the founding of the state, its cities, and the nation.
 

Today, there are 12 tribes throughout the Lower and Upper peninsulas, and there is archeological evidence of their ancestors making Michigan their home as early as 11,000 years ago. This is shortly after the end of the last glacial period that formed Michigan's iconic Great Lakes.
