To build community, improve lives, and foster social justice, Matrix Theatre Company teaches, creates, and shares theatre as an instrument of transformation.
Since 1991, Matrix Theatre Company has created outstanding, affordable, and inclusive professional and educational theatre that addresses issues of community concern. We amplify the voices in our community by creating powerful artistic exchanges that stimulate meaningful dialogue and foster empathy and equity for all.
The intimacy of our space brings the audience so close that they can see the actors think, allowing playwrights, directors, and performers to explore ideas and words in a way that larger theatres cannot. At Matrix, every voice matters. We provide "pay-what-you-can" previews for low-income audiences to attend professional shows. We also draw on community experts to lead panel discussions on issues the play explores.
Our focus on quality recently won several awards and critical acclaim. Our production of "2.5 Minute Ride" received "Best One-Person Show," "Best Actress in a Drama," and "Best Performance - One Person Show." And our latest world premiere, "Dream Deferred, Detroit, 1967," garnered international attention and critical acclaim. It'sAllTheatre.com hailed it as one of Southeast Michigan's "Best of 2016-2017 Season."
