In 1913 the Rev George Bennard completed his hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" while staying in Pokagon, MI. He sang the final version for the first time at a revival meeting in the Pokagon Methodist Episcopal Church. The church is undergoing restoration. Behind the old church is a beautiful garden which features a 13-foot wooden cross on a hill, a statue of Christ, and a picnic shelter.The garden is open year-round to the public and is handicap accessible. There is no charge for private tours of the old church, which are available by appointment.
