Known to locals as the Hadley Hills, Ortonville Recreation Area is a gem that offers a wonderful wooded paradise for equestrians in Southeastern Michigan. The well-marked, looped system offers 8.5 miles of wooded trails in a moraine landform produced by melting glacial ice. The result is an area with basin lakes, sinkholes, and unusual shape to the numerous hills. As some sections of the trails are rocky, horseshoes or boots are suggested. Spring/rainy periods can create slightly muddy conditions at a few spots between the trailhead and marker 2, where the looped trail sections begin.
In the winter, once the trail is covered with at least 4 inches of snow, the trail is open to snowmobieling. Please note the trail is not groomed and only a section of the staging area is plowed for parking.
The staging area is located on Fox Lake Road. A connecting trail leads from the staging area to the Ortonville Equestrian Campground, which has 25 spacious sites.
The campground and trails are maintained with the help of the Ortonville Recreation Equestrian Association, for more information about this organization and planned activities, follow them on Facebook.
