Grand Rapids
Grand Rapids is a city firmly dedicated to the arts. Grand Rapids is best known for ArtPrize, an international art competition that draws visitors from around the globe as it transforms downtown streets, parks, rivers and venues into a massive, walkable gallery every fall. But the art scene here isn’t seasonal. The Grand Rapids Art Museum houses an impressive permanent collection spanning centuries of American and European work, while the Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives preserves the stories and creative contributions of West Michigan’s Black community.
Beyond the institutions, public art projects have turned the city itself into a canvas – murals, sculptures and installations appear around nearly every corner downtown. Or, enjoy beautiful blooms and artwork in one setting at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, which is featuring exhibits of Chihuly’s world-famous and stunning glass creations until November 1, 2026.
Saugatuck
Saugatuck more than earns the title of the Art Coast of Michigan. A dense concentration of galleries fills Saugatuck’s streets, featuring art across every medium, from both local and national artists. Sift through paintings, glass, ceramics, jewelry and more, or get a peek behind the curtain as you observe some of the works in progress featured in many galleries. If you’re an artist yourself, the Art Farm Retreat offers micro-retreats, residencies and workshops in a beautiful natural setting just outside town. Create among flickering fireflies, along beautiful ponds and woods, and underneath the sparkling stars – then gather around a bonfire after dark to connect with like-minded creatives.
Ann Arbor
Ann Arbor has everything an art lover could want. Every July, the Ann Arbor Art Fair draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to one of the largest juried art fairs in the country, filling downtown streets with work from artists across the nation. Year-round, the Ann Arbor Art Center anchors the local scene with rotating exhibitions, classes and community events. Outdoors, murals brighten alleyways and building facades across the city, and independent galleries keep the creative energy flowing between festivals.
Detroit
No conversation about art in Michigan is complete without mentioning Detroit's creative legacy. The Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the largest and most significant art museums in the country, home to Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry Murals and a collection spanning 5,000 years. The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), set in a former auto dealership, takes a different approach, focusing on experimental, forward-looking art rooted in the culture of the city itself.
Detroit’s music legacy is just as iconic. The legendary Motown Museum preserves the studio and story behind the sound that changed American music. And some of the city’s most compelling art is outdoors – Detroit is ranked the sixth best city for street art collections. Eastern Market’s outdoor murals turn an entire neighborhood into an open-air gallery. The Heidelberg Project’s outdoor art celebrates community legacy and empowers the next generation of artists. The Detroit Artist Market highlights work by Detroit and Michigan artists across all media, while also hosting a lively selection of events, including film screenings, fashion shows, music and dance performances.
Marquette
In the Upper Peninsula city and on the shore of Lake Superior Marquette, has a growing creative community shaped by the rugged beauty the north and inspired by Lake Superior’s dramatic moods. Downtown galleries and studios showcase local and regional artists, and the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University hosts curated exhibitions as well as a sizeable permanent collection of art.
