Early Detroit: Black Women Who Changed History brings to light the stories of six extraordinary women long overlooked in American history, remembered only in passing notes or within the margins of others’ narratives. Told through a whimsical yet grounded style, this presentation weaves little-known African American history with honest storytelling that will move you to both laughter and tears.
Presented by Sharon Sexton, author, historian and filmmaker, who has been collecting Michigan’s black history for more than 35 years. Her research led to a video documentary, Black Bottom and Paradise Valley, The Forgotten Legacy. Sexton's discoveries also contributed to two monuments being built on the Detroit River, The Gateway to Freedom Monument in Hart Plaza, Detroit and the Tower of Freedom Monument in Windsor, Ont., Canada.
