The park features 15 miles of trails through rolling hills, open meadows and forested ridges, open to horseback riders and hikers. Visitors can access the trails from the horse staging area located just southeast of Ionia's Equestrian Campground
Sections of the trail follow the river and boast great water crossings and a nice wooden bridge. The trails are laid out in an irregular oval, with multiple trails connecting the north side to the south side, allowing for many options to configure your ride. This helps each ride be different from the last! Horses are only allowed on designated equestrian trails.
As if all these great amenities aren’t enough, the friends group created an equine confidence course, which wraps around part of the campground and features 10 challenges. Each challenge also has a bypass for those who choose not to complete an obstacle. The friends group also helped install an arena next to the day-use staging area which can be used by trail riders to warm up their horses prior to riding. Their next project includes expanding the confidence course and connecting it to the arena.
The equestrian campground and trails are maintained with the help of the Ionia Horse Trails Association. Visit the Ionia Horse Trails Facebook page
