St. Joseph Co. Historical Society of Michigan owns and operates three sites.
1.) 34 N. Main St. Three Rivers is our headquarters and research archives. Dedicated to topics unique to St. Joseph Co. MI with particular emphasis on One Room School Archives, first source documents and references including land records, genealogy and obituaries collections.
2.) The White Pigeon Prairie U.S. Land Office, a state and national historic site. The only standing land office in the mid-west, this recently restored Greek revival style building was in operation 1831-34. As land in southwestern Michigan became available from the federal government pioneers applied for the land patent at $1.25 an acre at this office. The site features surveying equipment, special exhibits, maps and documents relevant to the great land rush before Michigan became a state in 1837. Summer hours. See sjchsmi.com for more information and open house dates. Special tours available upon request. Handicap accessible.
3. Chief Wahbememe Memorial Park - Corner of U.S. 12 and U.S. 131. A small roadside park includes the gravesite of Potawatomi Chief Wahbememe (Chief White Pigeon) and a Veterans memorial to all persons serving in the U.S. military from White Pigeon Township.
