Houghton is located within the Keweenaw Peninsula, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a four season scenic wonderland and surrounded by water with numerous inland lakes and streams. An annual average of 180 inches of snowfall, this area is a focal point for winter sport enthusiasts. The Keweenaw's 233 miles of snowmobile trails offer a variety of scenery and terrain.

Houghton has received designation and is identified as a Pure Michigan TrailTown.
